Engineer / Supply chain / Quick commerce

Hiren Vasani

I'm an Associate Director of Engineering at Myntra, in Bengaluru. My teams, about seventy engineers, build the supply chain and quick commerce platforms behind the shopping experience: warehouse management, inventory, fulfilment, and the seller systems around them.

I arrived in 2018, when Myntra acquired Pretr, an omnichannel commerce startup where I'd been the founding product and engineering lead. I spent a year doing product management, decided I preferred engineering, and have been building teams here since. Before any of that I started with C in college, mostly because someone left a compiler on a shared machine and nobody stopped me. These days it's mostly Go and Python.

What keeps me interested is that the hard parts are rarely algorithmic. A warehouse, a courier, a seller and a customer each have a different idea of what's true at any given moment, and most of the engineering is reconciling those views fast enough that nobody notices.

The longer I do this, the less of the job is systems and the more of it is people. Good systems tend to be a by-product of good engineers, and only rarely the other way round. What took me longest was getting comfortable with decisions being made without me. If I have to be in the room for every call, the team only works when I'm available.

Outside work it's mostly family. The engineering habit follows me home, though: I automate small domestic annoyances that would have been quicker to just do by hand.

I write occasionally. Most recently The 1-Second Rule: How Latency Shapes E-commerce Success in India, for Medium.

Now

At work, most of my attention is on quick commerce: fulfilment and seller systems that have to behave when demand is spiky and delivery windows are measured in minutes rather than days. Compressing a promise from two days to twenty minutes removes most of the slack that used to hide our mistakes, which has been a useful and occasionally uncomfortable education.

The rest of what I'm up to
